A lot of people ask Northerners why on earth they stay put when the temperatures drop below freezing and snow threatens to imprison us in our homes. They understand the beauty of Michigan in the summer, with our many lakes, dunes, and forests; yet it’s hard for them to grasp the idea of an enticing, beautiful, adventure-filled winter.

Some of us who live here have even forgotten or simply not noticed the opportunities for fun go up as the temperature goes down. Those lakes don’t disappear when they freeze, they turn into skating rinks where we play pick-up games of hockey with our neighbors and families. Those dunes don’t disappear when they are covered in snow, they turn into sledding hills, or hiking trails. Those forests don’t disappear when the trees lose their leaves, they turn into blissfully silent, sparkling retreats for hiking or snowshoeing.

With winter comes many new activities. Skiing, snowboarding, tubing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, dog sledding, snowmobiling, and ice skating are just a few things we have the chance to try. We even head farther north to find ice caves and test our bravery by venturing out onto frozen Lake Superior.

Don’t let the cold and the minimal daylight take away your spirit of adventure this year. Go out and take advantage of the many blessings that we have here in our state.
