4WD & AWD Tire Replacement

Find quick answers to all of your questions about AWD tire replacement, 4WD tire replacement, and rotating your tires on AWD/4WD vehicles.

Should You Replace All 4 tires on Your AWD or 4WD Vehicle at the Same Time?

Yes, you should replace all four tires on your AWD or 4WD vehicle at the same time to prevent the driveline components in your vehicle from failing. Both all-wheel drive and four-wheel drive vehicles have specialized differentials and/or viscous couplings that enable brief variations in wheel speeds—like turning a corner or temporarily losing traction. However, if these components are constantly working because of mismatched tires, or tires with different diameter variations, they will take on excessive heat and premature wear until they fail.

Because tires with varied diameters rotate a different number of times per mile, AWD and 4WD vehicles must use closely matched tires. Tire diameter variations can stem from the unintentional use of differing tire sizes, different tread designs, tires from various manufacturers, varying inflation pressures, or even tires worn to different tread depths. This means that maintaining your vehicle's recommended tire pressure and using matched tires on all wheel positions are necessary for reducing strain on your vehicle's driveline.

Replace your tires with the same brand, type, and size to avoid driveline damage to your 4-wheel drive or all-wheel drive vehicle.

Can You Replace Just Two of Your Tires on Your AWD or 4WD Vehicle?

While some vehicle manufacturers suggest that slight diameter differences should be okay, we do not recommend replacing just two tires on your AWD or 4WD vehicles. Application is the least stressful when all four of your tires are the same tire brand, tread design, and equivalent tread depth.

However, if you do wish to replace individual tires on your AWD or 4WD vehicle, you should consult your vehicle's manual or contact your dealer's service department for confirmation of their specific requirements.

How to Rotate Your Tires on an AWD/4WD Vehicle

Because the front and rear tires of AWD and 4WD vehicles have distinct roles in acceleration, braking, and cornering, rotating your tires becomes crucial, ensuring uniform treadwear across all tires and minimizing potential stress on your driveline. Suggested for AWD, RWD, or 4WD vehicles, the rearward rotation pattern is great for non-directional tires with the same size and offset.

Rearward Cross Tire Rotation:

  • • The left rear tire moves to the left front
  • • The right rear tire moves to the right front
  • • The right front tire moves to the left rear
  • • The left front tire moves to the right rear
  • • If the vehicle has a spare tire, it moves to the right rear, and the left front tire becomes the spare.

See below for a visual representation of the rearward cross tire rotation.

For best results, you’ll want to schedule your service to get your tires rotated every 3,000-5,000 miles. Learn more about how often you should rotate your tires.

In a rearward cross tire rotation pattern, the left rear tire moves to the left front, the right rear tire moves to the right front, the right front tire moves to the left rear, and the left front tire moves to the right rear.
