Winter weather is here, which means it’s time to think about replacing your tires. Neglecting vehicles costs the U.S. economy over $2 billion every year — and it’s entirely possible that you could shoulder some of that cost if you don’t take preventative action.
Here are 4 basic tips you should know.
Although your used tires should be inspected at least once every year, the five-year mark is when you need to start paying attention to them more carefully. After five years, your tires will have been through quite a bit wear, and it may be time to start thinking about visiting your local tire company.
After 10 years, your tires should be replaced. At this point, you’re only jeopardizing the health of your car and the lives of people traveling in it. Used tires can be completely bald and make for some pretty bad accidents, especially during the winter months. You shouldn’t wait more than 10 years to have your tires replaced.
If you neglect your tires, they’re not going to last to the manufactures estimated mileage. However, if you inspect them often, check the air pressure regularly, clean them, and have them rotated, your tires will last much longer. Don’t forget that tires can lose almost half of their air pressure without a visible difference.
The more you know about your car, the better. If you buy a used car from its owner, you’re going to want to check the manufacturing date on the tires. Doing this will let you know the tire age to determine if they should be replaced.
Taking care of your car is important, but taking care of your tires is especially so for day to day driving.
