Spring Break Prep

We’re all itching. The grey skies have taken over and cabin fever is setting in. It takes the average Michiganer close to 1000 miles to drive to Hilton Head, SC or Gulf Shores, AL, and that’s if you live around Grand Rapids. Obviously it can take more depending on where you live. Your Spring Break vacation is approaching!

The winter roads have surely taken a toll on your tires the past few months. Potholes have knocked your wheels out of balance and alignment, your tread is worn and your air pressure is running low. It happens to the most careful drivers. Now you’re closing in on vacation time down south. Hotels are booked and the bathing suits are packed, but there is one more important factor you must consider. The safety of you and your family.

If you are one of the lucky ones to have a spring break planned you should take a few steps to make sure you have a safe round trip. 2000 miles is a lot of driving on potentially bad tires.

First, check your tire’s tread. The penny test is a simple one you can do to ensure your tires do not need replacing. Place a penny in your tires’s tread and turn the penny so Abe’s head points down into the tread. If his head disappears into the tread, your tread is fine. If you can see his entire head, it may be time to replace your tires.

How about an alignment? A properly aligned vehicle achieves greater fuel efficiency and a smoother driving experience. Here are some things to watch out for to determine if you may need a wheel alignment:

– Severe inside or outside edge wear on your tires.

– Pulling to one side or the other.

– If you have gotten new tires an alignment is recommended.

– An off-center steering wheel.

– If your daily drive contains train tracks, rough or gravel roads.

– If you have recently had suspension work.

Balancing your vehicle’s tires will certainly lead to a smoother ride. If you are experiencing any vibrations while driving at a high speed then it is most likely due to unbalanced tires. You may also notice vibrations in the floorboard or your seat, so if you notice anything just let us know. Also, be on the lookout for excessive wear on your tires, either on the inside or outside.

Finally, a properly inflated tire will make that trip down south more enjoyable and safe. Keeping your tires properly inflated has many benefits. Your tires will wear evenly, which prolongs their life and can improve your vehicle’s fuel economy. When correctly inflated, your tires can perform at their best which means better handling, dependable traction and a more comfortable ride for you.

So, now that Spring Break is near, make sure you will be safe as you drive towards sunshine and fun.
