Important Winter Driving Tips to Keep in Mind This Season

Winter is officially upon us, snow and all. Not only does that mean getting up early to clean off the car before work, it means more hazardous driving conditions for everyone. Snow and ice are making their way onto roads in the low temperatures, which means you need to start thinking about winter driving safety.

From tire retreading to emergency preparedness, here’s a few winter driving tips to help you stay safe on the road this season.

Service Your Tires

If you haven’t put winter tires on your car yet — and all four of them, at that — you absolutely need to. Winter tires are designed for better traction in the snow and ice, so it’s important that you have them put on your car. In addition, you should make sure your tire pressure stays where it’s supposed to. A tire can lose up to 50% of its inflation and still seem round, so it’s important to check your tire pressure frequently. Your tire company should be able to help you service your tires to prepare for winter driving.

Car Problems? Get it Fixed Now

Don’t wait to get your car problems fixed. If you continue to ignore an issue with your tires, it’s likely going to become a serious problem that many tire companies could have fixed in a few short minutes. A car breaking down during the summer or fall at least affords you the luxury of waiting in the warm air, but winter temperatures aren’t so kind.

Keep Supplies on Hand

On the off chance that everything is running smoothly in your car and it breaks down anyway, your emergency supplies should be ready to go. From used tires in the trunk to extra blankets in the back seat, you should always be prepared for the worst. If you’re concerned that you don’t have all of the materials necessary for a proper emergency kit, there are pre-packed kits always available.

Above all else, your tires should be your number one priority. Whether you’re investing in retreading those snow tires or just keeping up with maintenance, tires are your car’s only point of contact with the road!
