Don’t Leave Tire Maintenance Out of Your Spring Cleaning Routine

Just because winter is over doesn’t mean you should stop paying attention to your tires. They’re still one of the most important aspects of your vehicle, as they’re its only point of contact with the road. So before you keep those winter tires on all summer long, here are a few important spring tire maintenance tips you need to keep in mind.

Wheel Alignment

Winter weather is unforgiving on your tires with slick roads, salt deposits, and a number of other factors influencing the condition of your wheels. Fortunately, there’s a simple solution to some of the issues that winter weather causes: wheel alignment. This ensures that your wheels are in the proper places and that they wear out evenly throughout the season. Not to mention it will solve any handling issues like pulling to one side or the other.

Tire Rotating

Rotating is another important tire maintenance task. One or two of your tires may get worn out more quickly than the others. Typically the front wheels are the ones that get worn out first. Tire companies will recommend a rotation every 7,500 miles or so to ensure even wear across all four wheels.

Tread

Checking tread between tire alignments and rotations is an important step to take. Not only can it be a helpful indicator of when you need to rotate, it can also let you know when you need new tires entirely. The easiest way to check your tread is to use the quarter test. If the tread doesn’t reach George Washington’s hairline when the quarter is placed in it, then it’s time for new tires.

Tire Pressure

Whether you have used tires or new ones, checking your tire pressure is essential. A tire can lose up to 50% of its inflation pressure and still appear to be fully inflated, which means you need to pay extra attention to this, especially in early spring when temperature fluctuates.

Transitioning from winter to spring can be challenging, especially if you’re not sure how your car fits into the spring cleaning schedule. But these tips should help you get your car ready to roll for the upcoming season.
